Proposal for Tunnel Lighting Reuse

Easier, less expensive replacement for LED lighting

Overview

Tunnel lighting is changing from sodium and fluorescent lighting to more environmentally-friendly LEDs. Until now, the replacement of tunnel lighting with LEDs has been expensive and time-consuming, as the lighting fixtures and cables had to be replaced. Now, we propose an innovative, simple, and low-cost way to achieve LED lighting.

Proposal
  • The lamp housing is made of stainless steel (SUS), which is resistant to rust and has a long life.
  • LED lighting can be realized by reusing the SUS housing and replacing the internal parts.
  • Symmetrical lighting and pro-beam lighting are available.

LED lighting through reuse is a low-cost way to ensure a proper lighting environment to improve the driving experience.
It also makes a significant contribution to reducing maintenance costs.

The performance of LEDs will vary with improvements in luminous efficiency and other factors.

Benefits of LED Lighting Replacement

Reduces electricity costs, eliminates the need for lamp replacement and is environmentally friendly.
Comparison of maintenance costs (10 years) in a 1000-meter class tunnel (our estimate)

Reduction in electricity costs

Power consumption is about 38% of NH
Reduction of approximately
32 million yen

Reduction in lamp replacement costs

NH lamp replacement cost
Reduction of approximately
35 million yen

Benefits of reusing existing lamps
[1] Replaceable without affecting existing equipment
  1. Only the inside of the lamp is replaced, so the power supply equipment, cables, racks, etc. can be used as they are.
  2. Supports various distribution voltages.
    (460, 440, 240, 200 and 100 V. Prior confirmation is required)
  3. Dimmable LEDs are also supported. (Dimming line is required.)
[2] Easy to replace in a short time
  1. As the LED products are assembled at the factory, there is no need to remove the lighting fixture itself. (Depending on the structure of the lamp, it may need to be removed.)
  2. Can be replaced in a short time. (Time required per unit: approx. 10 minutes)
  3. Easy to replace as no special parts are used.
[3] Minimize and level out costs in the long term.
  1. Low-cost replacement.
  2. Can be replaced whenever and wherever you need it. (In conjunction with inspection, lamp replacement, cleaning, etc.)
  3. Can be tailored to your budget. (Budget minimization and leveling)
Effectiveness Verification

In the Hikone Tunnel on the Meishin Expressway (outbound line: Maibara Junction to Hikone Interchange), the fixtures of high-pressure sodium lighting were reused and replaced with LED lighting.
When measured after the replacement, the lighting characteristics, such as brightness and uniformity, were rated as excellent.
The LED lighting improves the driving environment because of its superior color rendering compared to high-pressure sodium lighting.
